Simek, Joan “Jo Ann” E. (Matheus) (28 OCT 1916 - 29 JAN 2017)
Joan “Jo Ann” E. Simek, 83, of Country Gardens Assisted Living, Medford, passed
away on Sunday, January 29 at Aspirus Country Gardens, Medford where she had
resided for the past 4 years.
Funeral services will be held at 1:30 PM on Saturday, February 4 at Immanuel Ev.
Lutheran Church, Medford, with Rev. James Krueger officiating. Interment will be
at Zion Ev. Lutheran Cemetery, Stetsonville.
Pallbearers will be her grandsons, Jeremy Wolfe, Brandon, Jasen & Garrett
Cummings, Ben & Josef Simek.
Visitation will be at 5-8 PM on Friday, February 3 at Immanuel Ev. Lutheran
Church, Medford where there will be a 6:00 PM VFW Auxiliary service held that
evening; visitation will also be held from 12:30 PM until the time of services
at 1:30 PM at the church on Saturday, February 4.
Jo Ann was born on February 16, 1933, at Medford, to William A. and Anne (Feggestad)
Matheus.
She attended Medford area elementary schools, graduate of Medford High School
and Taylor County Normal School, Medford.
In March of 1955, at Immanuel Ev. Lutheran Church, Medford, Jo Ann was married
to Ronald “Ron” L. Simek. They were later divorced.
They farmed in the Town of Ogema for a period of time. Moved to Medford where
they co-owned/co-operated Tombstone Tap Tavern. From 1962-1986 she was active as
a co-owner & treasurer of Tombstone Pizza Corp. in Medford. She served for
periods of time on the Medford City Council, Memorial Hospital Board, Medford
Library Board, Marshfield Hospital & Clinic Board, Medford VFW Auxiliary where
she was past treasurer, president & historian. She was also a past president &
treasurer of the Wisconsin VFW Auxiliary. She was also a member of Immanuel Ev.
Lutheran Church, Medford.
Jo Ann is survived by her children, Rhonda (Robert) Cummings, Jeffrey (Lisa)
Simek & Wendy (Brian) Cummings all of Ogema, Tony (Sandra) Simek of Cody, WY, 12
grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren.
She is also survived by her siblings, William (Evie) Matheus of West Bend, WI &
Robert (Venita) Matheus of Beaver Dam, WI.
Jo Ann is predeceased by her parents William A. and Anne (Feggestad) Matheus;
and a brother, Donald Matheus.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions be given to the
Medford VFW Auxiliary.
