Robert Meyer, son of Mr. and Mrs. Alfred Meyer, route 2, Loyal (Clark Co.,
Wis.), has achieved another first in the American Legion Oratorical contest and
is now eligible to compete in the state event to be held at Jefferson High
School in Jefferson, Wisconsin, on Saturday, March 18, at 2:00 p.m.
Robert, who represented the Seventh District, received a first award and a gold
medal at the American Legion Regional Oratorical Contest held at the American
Legion Clubhouse in Stevens Point last Sunday, February 27. Also competing with
Robert was Greg Bero of Algoma, representing the Ninth District. The contestant
representing the Eighth District was not able to be present.
Judging the contest were Miss Mary Jane Leary, an instructor of Communications
Department at the University of Wisconsin, Stevens Point, Mrs. Jerome Kranig,
Stevens Point, and Mrs. Fred Fink, Judge of Wood County Court at Marshfield. The
leading American Legion officers present were Donald Waydick of Prairie du Sac,
Seventh District Commander; Harry W. Packman of La Crosse, member of the State
Oratorical Contest Committee; Bob Frautschy of Marshfield, state Vice-Commander;
and Gene Artz of Loyal, Seventh District Vice-Commander and a member of the
State Oratorical Contest Committee.
Attending from Loyal were Mr. and Mrs. Artz, Mr. and Mrs. Meyer, Dr. and Mrs.
Edward M. Trnka, Chet Smith, J.R. Thomas, Jess Raab, William A. Theisen Jr.,
Allen Teter, Tom Collinson, and Mrs. Marvelene Butterbrodt, Bob's coach.
