Robert Meyer, son of Mr. and Mrs. Alfred Meyer, RFD 2, Loyal (Clark Co., Wis.)
won the State American Legion Oratorical Contest held at Jefferson High School
last Saturday, March 16, 1972, and received a gold medal with an $800
scholarship as a reward.
Robert has been the third consecutive individual from Loyal, Leonard Hansen and
Scott Needham were prior to him, to have competed at the State American Legion
Oratorical Contest, and the second to have won the state title. Scott Needham
won it last year. Robert will now compete with three other orators from the
states of Minnesota, North Dakota and South Dakota on April 10 at one of the
National Regional Contests, at Huron, South Dakota.
Competing with Robert were Jay Wood of Merrill, representing Post 446; Lori
Kitke of Lodi, representing, Post 216; and Scot Roberts, Kettle Moraine,
representing Post 415. In the contest these individuals were required to give an
oration last from eight to ten minutes and an extemporaneous speech three to
five minutes long. Judging of the contest was tructly based on the oration.
Although the extemporaneous speaking was judged, it had no effect on the placing
of the contestants. In the national contests, extemporaneous speaking will be
included in the judging.
Results of the contest went as follows: Oration; Robert Meyer, first; Jay Wood
Second; Lori Kitke, third; and Scott Roberts, fourth. Extemporaneous: Rober
Meyer, first; Jay Wood, second; Scott Roberts, third; and Lori Kitke, fourth.
The other three contestants received bronze medals and certificates.
Attending from Loyal were Mr. and Mrs. Gene Artz;, Mr. and Mrs. Meyer; Jesse
Raab and Chet Smith representing Post 175; Allen Teter, Tom Collinson, and Mrs.
Marvelene Butterbrodt, Robert's coach.
