Virgil was born on December 12, 1925, the son of Otto and Nina (Stephens) Wilke
in Dorchester. He was united in marriage to Ellen Worstell on June 26, 1970 in
Rockford, IL.
Virgil was a Marine and veteran of World War II. He served in B Battery, 15th
Marine Artillery Division. The 6th Marine Division was formed in September of
1944 and has a unique history. Virgil was part of this division, serving in
Okinawa and Guam, taking part in battles in Yae-Take and Sugar Loaf Hill and
being awarded the Presidential Unit Citation. The 6th Marine Division was
disbanded shortly after the war and never stepped foot on American shores, since
being formed and disbanded.
Virgil was a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother and uncle. He loved
listening to Country and Western music, fishing, hunting and helping care for
his handicapped grandson, Alexander Drinka.
Virgil enjoyed living his life to the fullest; there was nothing he wouldn't try
to tackle.
