In 1948, Doris received her Master of Art degree, from the University of California-Berkeley. That year, she married George Berteau with whom she spent 55 wonderful years.

All of her professional life was spent teaching French in California and Wisconsin, including 25 years in the Racine Unified School District. In 1989, after George had retired from his law practice and Doris was no longer teaching, they moved to Neillsville, where they became part of the community. Doris belonged to Delta Kappa Gamma, the PEO Sisterhood, and the Red Hat Society. She enjoyed playing golf, playing bridge, reading, and traveling.

She is survived by one step-son, John of Sarasota, FL; one cousin, Kathy Harris of Plantation, FL; her dear friends, Lorraine and Bob Shaw, and Joyce Baker, along with many other friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband George.
