Peter Matyka, (29 APR 1930 - 15 APR 2017)

Peter Matyka, 86, of W3462 Trout Avenue, Rib Lake, passed away on Saturday, April 15 at Our House Assisted Living, Medford where he had resided for the past 10 weeks most recently under the care of Hope Hospice.

The funeral Mass will be held at 11:00 AM Wednesday, April 19 at Good Shepherd Catholic Church, Rib Lake, with Father Otto Bucher officiating. Interment will be at St. Ann’s Cemetery, Township of Greenwood, where there will also be graveside military rites performed by the Rib Lake American Legion military honors team.

Pallbearers will be his grandchildren, Jason Wille, Nathan Long, Patrick & Kyle Matyka, Katie Switlick and Justin Thums.

Good Shepherd Catholic Church, Rib Lake from 4-7:30 PM on Tuesday, April 18 where there will be a 7:30 PM Catholic rosary service held that evening, and also at church from 9:30 AM until the time of services at 11 AM on Wednesday, April 19

Peter was born on April 29, 1930, in the Township of Greenwood, to Joseph and Agnes Matyka. He attended Highland Elementary School, Town of Greenwood, and was a 1948 graduate of Rib Lake High School. On September 12, 1959, Peter was married to Bernice M. Claas, at Fussville, WI.

After his education, he entered the US Army and served from 1951-1953 during the Korean War. After the military, he moved to Milwaukee and worked at Allis Chalmers, Hillcrest Garage, International Harvester & American Motors for periods of time. In 1962, they moved to the Town of Greenwood to work the family farm with his brother. He farmed there until his retirement in 2004. In retirement, he continued to help with work on the family farm. He enjoyed driving tractor, tinkering on tractors, fishing and hunting. He was a member of Good Shepherd Catholic Church, Rib Lake & the Rib Lake American Legion.

Peter is survived by his wife, Bernice Matyka, Rib Lake; children Christine (David) Wille of Chelsea; Cheryl (Dan) Graumann of Rib Lake; Donna (Leon) Long of Rib Lake; Gerald (Joan) Matyka of Rib Lake; Mark (Sara) Matyka of Rib Lake; Melissa (Allen) Thums of Weston; 15 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren.

His is also survived by his siblings, Charlie Matyka of Rib Lake; Lucy (Marvin) Liske of Medford and Paul Matyka of Rib Lake.

Peter is predeceased by his parents, Joseph and Agnes Matyka; grandson Timothy Long; siblings Joseph, Jim, John, Frank Matyka; Agnes Maager, Elizabeth Gauger, Sister Catherine Matyka, Annie Erl & baby Mary in infancy.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions to be given to the family for a future designation.
