Baker, Elwyn A. (1920? - 2 April 2017) With Flag

Elwyn A. Baker, 96, of Clinton, AR, died April 2, 2017, at Baptist Hospital in North Little Rock, AR, He died of complications following a fall at his home in February. Elwyn was the son of Russell and Nellie Baker of Mazon, IL. He was an active youth, slowed early in life by contracting polio from which he fully recovered. He played baseball, organized his own dance band, and courted his wife Lola Jean Jewett when in high school. They eloped and stated their married life living in Davenport, IA.

Elwyn worked in several factories there before being drafted for military service in the summer of 1944. He was assigned to the European Army Forces and was wounded assaulting a bridge in Germany in March 1945. He spent a year in an army hospital recovering from his injuries. He then worked as a share cropper, and factory worker. Later, he purchased a dairy farm near Neillsville (on River Road). He worked as a Greenskeeper for several golf courses, and as a superintendent at another. He built a sailboat, musical instruments, model airplanes, and two homes. He retired to Arkansas in the 1990s.

Elwyn is survived by his wife of 76 years, Jean; daugher JoAnne Flynn and son-in-law John; daughter-in-law Priscilla Baker; six grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild, many living in Minnesota; as well as nieces and nephews.

Elwyn was preceded in death by his parents, his sister Jane, his son Corron, and his granddaughter Brandi.

Per his wishes, no services are planned; he will be inurned at a later date in the Jewett family plot in Mazon, IL. Remembrances may be directed to the VFW in his name.
