Asselin, Lyle “Chubb” (10 October 1919 – 18 January 1986) With Flag

Lyle “Chubb” Asselin, 66, of Thorp died Saturday morning, January 18, at St. Joseph’s Hospital, Marshfield. He had been admitted Friday. His death followed a lingering illness.

He was born October 10, 1919, in the Town of Reseburg, rural Thorp, the son of Edward and Annie (Bobb) Asselin. He married Florence Wiernasz July 23, 1942, at St. Hedwig's Catholic Church in Thorp. A soft drink distributor, he was a partner at the Thorp Bottling Works. He served during World War II and was a member of the Thorp American Legion Post and Knights of Columbus.

Surviving are his wife, two sons, Thomas of Vesper, and Bradley of Greenwood; one daughter, Phyllis Pickett of Schaumberg, Illinois; five grandchildren; two brothers, Gerald and Pete, both of Thorp. He was predeceased by two sisters.

The family requests memorials be sent to the American Cancer Society.

Memorial services were held Tuesday, January 21, at St. Bernard's Catholic Church in Thorp, and the Rev. John Puerner officiated. Burial will be made in the spring, in St. Hedwig's Cemetery. The Thorp Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Bartsch. Oscar (9 October 1900 – 16 January 1986)

Chili resident Oscar Bartsch, 85, succumbed Thursday afternoon, January 16, at Neillsville Memorial Hospital. He had been a patient there for the past three weeks.

He was born October 9, 1900, in the Town of Lynn, the son of Carl and Elizabeth (Kutsche) Bartsch. He attended Zion Lutheran School in the Town of Grant. On May 29, 1923, he married Beatrice Renne in Marshfield. They celebrated their golden wedding anniversary in 1973. She predeceased him on September 7, 1980.

A Chili resident since 1930, he was employed for 35 years as a maintenance man for the Chicago & Northwestern Railroad. He also worked for the Marshfield and Spencer UBC Lumber Company, for a year, before retiring. A member of Christ Lutheran Church, he served for many years on the church board.

Surviving is a daughter, Mrs. Melvin (Margaret) Bandt, Chili; four grandchildren; five great grandchildren; two brothers, Fr4ed and Carl, both residents at Bethel Living Center, Arpin. He was predeceased by his parents, two brothers and a sister.

Rev. Herbert Biermann conducted services held Monday, February 3, at Christ Lutheran Church, Chili. Organist was Mrs. Harold Montag. Interment was in Yolo Cemetery, Chili. Serving as pallbearers were Elmer Steffen, Victor and Harold Montag, Harley Loos, Gerald Nelson and Carsten Lovstad.

Becker, Louise Hannah (7 August 1913 – 22 January 1986)

Seventy-two year old Louise Hannah Becker, sister of Neillsville resident, Mrs. Kenneth (Agnes) Olson, died January 22 at Crandon. Funeral services, conducted by Rev. Markus Koepsell, were held at St. Paul’s Evangelical Lutheran Church on Saturday, January 25. Interment was in Lakeside Cemetery, Crandon.

Born August 7, 1913, at St. Hilaire, Minnesota, she was the daughter of Avin John and Olivia Josephine (Gigstad) Hed. She graduated from Crandon High School and Mankato State University, Mankato, Minnesota. She was a retired elementary school teacher. In 1952, at Crandon, she married Fred Becker. He predeceased her on December 9, 1981.

Mrs. Becker was a church organist and a member of St. Paul’s Church and the Ladies Aid, and also the Crandon Homemakers Club.

Surviving besides her sister Agnes of Neillsville, are two brothers, Edwin of River Falls, and Gordon of Minneapolis; and a brother-in-law, Paul Swenby of New Richmond. She was also predeceased by a sister, Marion Swenby.

Hobart, Frances F. (7 March 1908 – 6 January 1986)

Frances F. Hobart, 77, of Black River Falls and formerly of Merrillan, died Monday, January 6, in Family Heritage Home in Black River Falls.

She was born March 7, 1908, in Augusta to Anson and Josephine Smith. She married Guy Hobart in Minneapolis, and he died June 13, 1961.

Survivors include a son, Brian, of La Crosse; a stepson, Bruce Clark of Black River Falls; and three step grandchildren.

Services were held Wednesday morning at Jensen Funeral Home, Hixton, with the Rev. Daniel Sundeen officiating. Burial will be in Fairchild Cemetery in the spring.

Jacob, Gloria D. (7 October 1943 – 11 February 1986)

Forty-two year old Gloria Jacob, of 400 Spruce St., Marshfield, died suddenly on Tuesday, February 11, at her home.

Mrs, Jacobs was born October 7, 1943, at Neillsville, daughter of Chris and Florence (Altenburg) Vandeberg. Following her education she married Harold Jacob on October 31, 1961, in Neillsville. The couple farmed for several years in the Town of Weston. After the death of their daughter, Pamela Sue, on June 15, 1986, they moved to Marshfield. Subsequently, the couple divorced. She was then employed by Johnson Garment Company and Marshfield Oil Company.

Surviving are her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Chris Vandeberg, Neillsville; two sisters, Mrs. Montie (Jo Anne) Szydel, Athens, and Mrs. James (Georgie Ann) Duerr, Medford; and a brother, John, Granton.

Rev. M. Lynn Scott, of United Methodist Church, Merrillan, officiated at services held Friday, February 14, 11:00 a.m., at Gesche Funeral Home. Visitation will be Friday morning from 9 a.m. until time of services. Donna Chase and Charlotte Drescher will provide music. Interment will be in Dells Dam Cemetery. Serving as pallbearers are Jimmy and Terry Joe Vandeberg; Chris Ziegel; Montie Gene, Clayton, and Dennis Szydel.

Miller, Earl (28 July 1905 – 30 January 1986)

Eighty-year old Earl Miller, of Rt. 1 Chili, died Thursday morning, January 30, at Neillsville Memorial Home, where he had been a resident during the past five months.

Mr. Miller was born in Dixon, Illinois, on July 28, 1905, son of John and Bessie (Plummer) Miller. He began his education in Illinois, but moved with his parents to Greenwood where he continued his learning at Eaton Center School.

In 1923, he moved to the Town of Rock and operated a garage in Lindsey for several years. Moving to McHenry, Illinois, in 1950, he was employed doing factory work and also farmed. Following his retirement in 1972, he returned to the Town of Rock and resided there until entering Memorial Home.

Surviving are five brothers, Richard of Lakeland, Florida, Harold of Neillsville, Harry of Chili, Henry of Genoa, Illinois, and Clifford of Bellville, Illinois; several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents, and one brother, John.

Services were held Monday, February 3, with Rev. Paul Nelson officiating. Carol Snelling and Duane Helgerson provided music. Burial was in the Nasonville Cemetery.

Miller, Harold G. “Shorty” (28 June 1908 – 10 February 1986) With Flag

Rev. Paul Nelson and Rev. John Snyder will conduct services held at 11 a.m., Thursday, February 13, at Hansen Funeral Home, Marshfield, for Harold G. “Shorty” Miller, 77. A resident of Neillsville Memorial Home, Mr. Miller passed away Monday at Neillsville Memorial Hospital. Visitation will be from 4-9 p.m. on Wednesday, and on Thursday morning until the services. Burial will be in the Nasonville Cemetery.

Born June 28, 1908, at Lake Preston, South Dakota, he was son of John F. and Bessie (Plummer) Miller. His family moved to Greenwood and there he attended the Eaton Center School. In 1923, they moved to the Town of Rock. He never married. Employed for several years on farms in the Chili and Greenwood area, he also worked for a shingle manufacturer in Westboro.

He served with the 33rd Infantry Division, in the Pacific, during World War II. After discharge he lived at McHenry, Illinois, where he worked on farms and as a tow motor operator in a factory there. He served as caretaker for American Legion Post 4600, in McHenry, until his retirement in 1974. Moving back to Chili, he resided there until entering the nursing home on December 10, 1980.

Mr. Miller was a lifetime member of Palmer-Ritchie-Thomas American Legion Post No. 153, Pittsville; a member of the Loyal Order of the Moose Lodge No. 691; and the McHenry VFW Post.

Surviving are four brothers, Richard C. of Lakeland, Florida, Henry E. of Genoa, Illinois, Harry H. of Chili, and Clifford E. of Belleville, Illinois. He was predeceased by two brothers, John F. and Earl A.

Murphy, Frank E. (? – 27 January 1986)

The father of Neillsville resident Joan Fennessy died January 27 at his home in Syracuse, New York. Mr. Frenk Murphy, 74, was a life-long Syracuse resident and lived at 200 Lindbergh Road. A forty-year employee of Allied Chemical Corporation (Solvay Process Division), he retired in 1969.

Mr. and Mrs. Murphy, the former Dorothy Walter, celebrated their golden wedding anniversary on February 7, 1962.

Surviving besides his wife are three daughters, Mrs. James (Jean) Fennessy of Neillsville, Delores Kellogg of Jacksonville, Florida and Carol Fish of San Diego, California; eighteen grandchildren and eight great grandchildren. He was predeceased by a son, who died in 1982.

Wiech, Frances ( 29 March 1909 – 24 January 1986)

Mrs. Raymond (Frances) Wiech, died at 9:30 a.m., on Friday, January 24, at the Greenwood home of her daughter, Mrs. Adam (Kathleen) Skora.

The former Frances Novak was born March 29, 1909, in Thorp. After attending Clark County School, she worked in Chicago, until she came to reside with her daughter in Greenwood.

Surviving besides Kathleen Skora, and another daughter, Mrs. Margery Turn of Park Ridge, Illinois; are a son, George Craven of Arlington Heights, Illinois; three brothers, Edward and Robert Novak of Thorp, and John Novak, of St. Paul, Minnesota; three sisters, Mrs. Merle (Celia) Samplowski of Stanley, Mrs. Louis (Virginia) Lewan of Thorp, and Mrs. Thomas (Ruby) Cubista of St. Paul, Minnesota; and eighteen grandchildren.

Her first husband, Arthur Craver, passed away in 1943. Raymond Wiech, her second husband, died in 1983. She was also predeceased by her parents and a sister.

Services were held Tuesday, at Rinka Funeral Home, Greenwood, with Rev. Robert Streveler of St. Mary’s Catholic Church officiating.

Zimmerman, Lena H. (7 November 1908 – 26 January 1986)

Funeral services were held January 30 for former Neillsville resident, Lena H. Zimmerman, 77, who died January 26 at the Clark County Health Care Center. She had entered the facility in June 1984.

Rev. Paul Forde of Calvary Lutheran Church, Neillsville, officiated at the service from the Butzin-Marchant Funeral Home, Ripon, and at the following interment in the Markesan City Cemetery. The pallbearers were grand-nephews Emil, Herman, Raymond and Adam Simson.

Mrs. Zimmerman was born November 7, 1908, at Menomonee Falls, to Louis and Clara (Schlemper) Simson. She was a graduate of Ripon High School and of the Berlin Normal School, and taught school prior to her November 8, 1928, marriage to Frank Zimmerman. Later she was employed at the DuBois Supermarket in Ripon, and as a housemother at Ripon College. Following retirement from a receptionist position at Ripon College, she moved to Neillsville in 1974.

She was a member of Calvary Lutheran Church and had been active in the Neillsville Nutrition Center and County Aging Office activities.

Survivors include a daughter, Lois Kieser, Neillsville; and two grandsons, Douglas Kieser, Great Lakes, Illinois; and Brian Kieser, Eau Claire. She was preceded in death by her husband in 1946, and by two brothers.
