The construction season is beginning to bloom, and the continuing transformation
of Highway 29 to a four-lane expressway across the state has begun for 1997.
ASH Co. Inc. of Wausau has been at work for about a month at the inte4trsection
of Hwys. 29and H (Edgar Corners) on a $2.95 million contract to construct an
interchange and overpass. The four ramps will be usable by late fall of this
year according to Doug Ross, coordinator of Hwy. 29 projects in marathon County.
In the Abbotsford area, two projects are on tap for this summer. Strew
Construction from Two Rivers will begin paving work soon on the 10.5 mile
stretch of new roadbed from Withee to just west of Abbotsford. The preliminary
grading was done in 1996.
Jim Wendels, a DOT official in the district office at Wisconsin Rapids, said
final grading work will start May 12 on the west-bound lanes, with the paving
equipment moving from Withee to the east. Around the first of June, he sated
paving would begin, also on the west-to-east pattern.
The DOT official noted there are several structure to replace in Owen.
