Lawrence V. Cowles, longtime Loyal (Clark Co., Wis.) businessman, was honored
Monday evening by the Loyal Area Chamber of Commerce. Mr. Cowles was present
with a plaque in recognition of his services to the Loyal community from 1925 to
1972. Making the presentation at the annual meeting and banquet of the Loyal
Area Chamber of Commerce was Dennis, Cook, president.
Mr. Cowles came to Loyal in the early 1920's, and worked for several owners of
the Loyal Tribune, and in early 1927 was joined in a partnership with J.R.
Steiner. Together they published the newspaper until the fall of 1951, when they
sold it to Le Favreau.
In addition to the newspaper and commercial printing business at the Loyal
Tribune, Lawrence has developed a large business in office equipment and
supplies. After selling the newspaper and commercial printing business to Mr.
Favreau, Mr. and Mrs. Cowles devoted their efforts to the school and office
supply business. Last year the Cowles sold the business to a firm in Wisconsin
Rapids, which still operates it as Loyal School and Office Supply.
Lawrence Cowles was active in the community, being a charter member of the Loyal
Rotary Club. He also served for years as treasurer of the Loyal Community Fund.
