Habermeyer, Eugene J. “Gene” (27 MAY 1937 - 26 MAY 2017)

Eugene J. “Gene” Habermeyer, 79, of Normal, Ill., passed away on Friday, May 26, 2017, just four minutes shy of his birthday, at Advocate BroMenn Medical Center, Normal. Apparently God decided it would be more fun for him to celebrate his 80th birthday with his wife by his side in Heaven.

A military service will be held at 4 p.m. on Thursday, June 8 at the VFW Post #54, 1006 E. Lincoln St., Bloomington, Ill., where a celebration of Gene’s life will immediately follow until 8 p.m. Carmody-Flynn Funeral Home, Bloomington, Ill., is assisting the family with arrangements.

Interment will be held at a later date at Sacred Heart Cemetery, Stetsonville. The family has requested casual dress for the services, and if possible, Green Bay Packers attire or colors. Memorials may be directed to the Community Cancer Center, 407 E. Vernon Ave, Normal, Ill. 61761.

Gene was born on May 27, 1937 in Medford, the son of John and Elizabeth (Danen) Habermeyer. He married Mary A. Redmond on Jan. 22, 1966 and she preceded him in death on Jan. 27, 2017.

Gene graduated from Medford High School and served in the U.S. Army in Germany during the Berlin Crisis. He was a proud member of the VFW and Carl S. Martin American Legion Post #635, Normal, Ill. He worked in construction, installing chain link fences for over 25 years and later worked as a custodian at Second Presbyterian Church and Epiphany School. He was a member of the Catholic Order of Foresters and a charter member of Epiphany Church.

He is survived by a daughter, Gina Habermeyer of Normal, Ill.; a son, Rod Habermeyer of Bloomington, Ill; two sisters, Joan Paul of Dorchester and Mae Fetzer of Waunakee; and seventeen nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by a daughter, Christi Habermeyer-Erschen; and two sisters, Betty Beck and Anita Johnson.
