Ira K. Cole, another upstate New York native, resided in Colby for 34 years
after the war and taught school here.
Like many men of his time, he dropped everything to join the war effort. “Three
hours after his marriage, he enlisted in the army, serving in the Civil War
until its close,” his obituary states.
