Sylvester J. Davis, born in Pennsylvania, enlisted in Green Lake County six days
after his 21st birthday in 1862 and fought in several battles, including
Sherman’s march to the Sea, the Siege of Atlanta, and Harrison’s Field.
He was honorably discharged June 24, 1865, and moved to Colby in 1884.
When Davis died in 1926 at the age of 84, his obituary noted that only two
members of the local GAR Post, which once numbered 104 members, were left.
