Joseph A. Pettet belonged to the 8th Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry Regiment,
known for carrying a live bald eagle named “Old Abe” into battle.
Pettet had his left foot shattered by a gun shot during the 1865 siege of
Spanish Fort, Ala., and his leg had to be amputated above the ankle.
Pettet settled in the Unity area after the war and died in 1921 at the age of
79.
