Frank Riplinger, who was born in Germany in 1843, participated in General
Sherman’s famous “March to the Sea,” a bold and brutal campaign to strike at the
heart of Confederate forces in Savannah, GA.
After serving in the Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry, he became the namesake of
what is still known as Riplinger when he and his two sons started a general
store long the Central Wisconsin Railroad route from Owen to Spencer.
He died in 1925 at the age of 82, and is buried at St. Mary’s Cemetery.
