Neillsville Boys Receive Military Honors (29 May 1919)
Lieut. Austin Peterson arrived home from France on Saturday. He and Floyd Hanson
brought home French war crosses, “Croix de Guerre,” the decorations given by the
French government and which “cannot be bought, but mist be earned.” Lieut.
Peterson was awarded his cross for efficient service. Fuddy Hanson says he
didn’t do much. “Happened to locate a German machine gun next at Soissons and
took a couple of Frenchmen with me and put it out of business.” Peterson and
Hanson are as yet the only Neillsville boys who brought home the Croix de
Guerre.
