Shilts, Diana (ESPY Award – 12 July 2017)

Daina Shilts, 26, of Neillsville, received a coveted honorary ESPY Award July 12. Shilts joined former first lady Michelle Obama on stage during the awards show in Los Angeles as she presented a courage award to the son of Special Olympics founder Eunice Kennedy Shriver. Shilts was one of 25 Special Olympics athletes from across the country to receive the award and was one of only eight chosen to be on stage in front of sports stars and legends during the ESPY Award program. Shilts has won a number of gold medals in national and international snowboarding competitions. Shilts commented, “Just because we have a disability doesn’t mean we can’t do the same as you. We just have different challenges. I never let my disability define me.”
