An early morning fire New Year's Day destroyed a 76 by 115 foot barn on the
Terry Byrne farm, 10 miles northwest of Withee, town of Hixon (Clark Co., Wis.).
Twenty-four cows and 11 head of young stock were rescued and are being housed
temporarily in buildings belonging to a neighbor.
Winds and 24 degrees below zero temperatures hampered the Owen firemen. However,
they held the fire to the barn and saved the nearby farm residence.
The blaze was out of control when the firemen arrived at the scene. An
automobile stalled on the snow-blocked road had to be removed before foremen
could reach the Byrne farm.
Authorities said the fire was discovered about 7:15 a.m., apparently started
from the heating system in the barn.
The loss included 6,000 bales of hay, a large quantity of straw, two tons of
grain, and considerable equipment. A nearby silo was badly damaged by the
flames.
