The Community Fire Association was called to the Roy Ammentorp farm, two miles
south of Withee on Highway 73, in the Town of Longwood (Clark Co., Wis.) at 6:55
Tuesday evening.
The 110x36 foot barn, full of baled hay, was a mass of flames when the fire
department arrive, and was totally destroyed. Other nearby buildings were saved.
It is believed the fire started from spontaneous combustion. William Stargardt,
who operates the farm, said he had just gone into the house to eat while other
members of the family were still in the barn milking. He heard a 'pop' like
noise and saw the roof ablaze. They were about half through milking at the time
and all livestock were chased from the barn.
