Gallistel, John R. (26 AUG 1933 - 26 AUG 2017)
John R. Gallistel, 84, of Medford, passed away on August 26, 2017 on his
birthday, due to natural causes. He was born to Anton and Elizabeth Gallistel on
August 26, 1933 on the family farm near Gad.
He served in the Army in Anchorage, Alaska as a military policeman, where he
escorted President Eisenhower; he then went to work in Milwaukee at American
Motors for two years.
John married Arlene Nezval on June 9, 1962 and took over the family farm; she
preceded him in death in 2005. They sold the farm in 1998 and moved to Medford.
He went on to do seasonal work for Figgi’s in Marshfield. He later went on to
work for the Forestry Department until his retirement.
In his spare time he enjoyed fishing, traveling, spending time with his family
and grandchildren, going out to eat, visiting friends, spending time in the
woods, doing fieldwork, and attending church.
He was the Township of Bern Supervisor, and Board Member of the Medford Co-Op,
and member of the VFW and Knights of Columbus.
John is survived by his daughter, Mary (Kip) Swope of Rib Mountain and three
sons Kevin, John M., and Brian (Laura Thums) Gallistel , all of Medford; two
grandsons Michael and Alex, both of Rib Mountain. He is further survived by
three sisters, Noreen Cywinski of IL, Mary Grant of Schofield , and Donna Faber
of Medford.
In addition to his wife and parents, John is preceded in death by his siblings,
Donald, Jim, Bob, and Jeanne.
A Mass of Christian Burial will take place at 11:00 AM on Tuesday, August 29 at
Holy Rosary Catholic Church with Father David Nueschwander officiating; burial
will follow at Holy Rosary Catholic Cemetery. Visitation will take place on
Tuesday August 29 at Holy Rosary Catholic Church from 9:00 AM until the time of
service at 11:00 AM.
In lieu of flowers memorials in John’s name may be given to the family for use
at a later designation.
