Mary A. Thoma, born May 26, 1922, to Herman August and Mary Caroline (Wahl) Hagen in Neillsville, went to her Heavenly Home on Sept. 14, 2017. Mary was the youngest sibling to her brothers Herman, Gus and Bill Hagen, and her sisters Lillian May and Bertha (Lamovec) Huckstadt.

She married Donald (Swede) Thoma in Neillsville, and while Swede was serving his country during the war, she moved to Berlin with her father-in-law Art Thoma, to help in his Super Ice Cream Store. In earlier years, she was employed by Lamb-Skin Slipper Company and for many years as an institutional aide at Winnebago Mental Health Institute. Upon retirement, she was a member of the Berlin Senior Center where in her early 80’s she learned to paint. She was a volunteer at Berlin CHN Hospital, and a member of St. John Lutheran Church.

Besides her love of painting, crocheting, cooking, and gardening, she loved to travel.

Mary is survived by Bonnie (Merle) Resop, James Thoma, Pat (Ron) Yonke, and Bill (Karen) Thoma, and also Dan and Angie Thoma; her grandchildren, Kim (Tim) Thoma, Peter (Robin) Thoma, Brian (Sara) Resop, Brad Resop, Rob (Nayeli) Thoma, Nick Thoma, Scott (MaryBeth) Yonke, Curtis (Pam) Yonke, Rachel (Eric) Van Den Hout, Tony Thoma, Kelly (Dan) Quance, Mac Thoma, Brennen (Emily) Thoma and Kayla Thoma.

She is survived by her great-grandchildren: Katie, Marissa and Bethany Thoma, Ella and Melanie Resop, Karson, Addison and Carter Resop, Makaela, Jimena and Elizabeth Thoma, Ryan (Kayla) Yonke, Allison (Jacob) Yonke, Mitchell Yonke, Jadyn and Candon Yonke, Kobe and Kade Krebs, Dawson Van Den Hout, Addison and Allysa Thoma, and her great-great-granddaughter Alyse Yonke. She is survived by her longtime friend Doris Domiter as well as many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, brother and sisters, son Dennis Thoma (1975), and Grandson Jeffery Resop (1995) as well as her father-in-law Art Thoma.

Mary has lived the last six years at the Patriot Place in Berlin. We as a family want to thank the Patriot Place staff for their kindness, kisses, hugs, laughter, and loving attention that was given to our Mother. We can’t praise you enough for your wonderful care. Thank you to the Heartland Hospice Staff for the special care that you gave her with such devotion, and to the Heartland Volunteers for being there to hold her hand, and sing to her to bring her peace of mind. She was truly blessed to have all of you in her life. Thank you to the wonderful volunteers from St. John’s Church for your many visits these pat years which she always looked forward to. A special thank you to Mersim Mena for the visits and food.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, Sept. 20, 2017, at 11 a.m. at St. John Lutheran Church of Berlin with Pastor Brian Beardsley officiating. Burial will follow in the Oakwood Cemetery of Berlin.

Relatives and friends visited and paid their respect to Mary and her family Tuesday, Sept. 19, from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Wiecki-Shipchak Funeral Home of Berlin and at the church Wednesday from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m.
