Clark County Historical Society (Progress - 1974)
A listing of the recent donations was given at the regular meeting of the Clark
County Historical Society, held at the Immanuel United Church of Christ west of
Greenwood, last Thursday evening.
Several work days had been held at Colby which brought out more than a dozen
people, including several who furnished trucks to haul articles. They City of
Colby has hauled a considerable amount of fill onto the parking lot and on the
far north end of the property.
The Depot had been open during the Colby Cheese days so articles could be
brought at that time. The National Guard engineer’s corps of Eau Claire and
Abbotsford have begun setting up a loading dock and ramp.
The July annual picnic was held at Snyder Park, with a member who has become an
author, Mrs. Mabel Jonkel, reading articles from the history of Columbia. She
also has a book, “Recollections of Columbia, Wisconsin,” which has just come off
the press.
Mrs. Vahlia Pierce showed a video of her collection of the Columbian Expedition.
It was of the Exposition where the lots for Columbia were first sold. A letter
of appreciation and thanks from Mrs. Jonkel of Baraboo was read.
The Clark County Home Agent, M. D. Sjolin, explained (missing word) she had
planned and publicized Senior Citizens’ demonstrations at the Clark County
Historical site at the Clark County Fair. The society also had a display Sunday.
The updating of membership with a letter drive was quite successful, with six
life memberships in addition to many annual memberships, being paid up.
Treasurer Ruby Meihack also noted the generous contribution of a check from the
Marguerite Listeman Foundation.
Committees for the November concert with the Welsh Singers were discussed.
Following the business meeting, Mrs. Elmer Kuester, president of the Women’s
Guild of the church, gave a history of the congregation and the guild. A
centennial and reunion of former members was held in July.
