Becher, Aloysius A. (31 AUG 1924 - 4 NOV 2017)
Aloysius A. Becher, 93, Stratford, died on Saturday, Nov. 4, 2017, at his home
in the Town of Cleveland, Marathon County.
A Mass of Christian burial will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, Nov. 9, 2017, at
St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, Stratford, with Rev. Sengole Vethanayagam
presiding. Burial will take place in St. Joseph’s Cemetery in the Town of Eau
Pleine, Marathon County.
The visitation will be Wednesday from 4 p.m. until 7 p.m. at Sauter/Rembs
Funeral Home, Stratford, and on Thursday from 10 a.m. until service time at St.
Joseph’s Catholic Church. St. Joseph’s Parish Council of Catholic Women will
recite the rosary at 6 p.m. on Wednesday at the funeral home.
Al was born Aug. 31, 1924, in Stratford to Edward and Bertha (Harter) Becher. He
was a 1943 graduate of the Stratford High School and then volunteered for the
U.S. Army. He served in the WWII European Theatre until his honorable discharge
in 1946 with the rank of sergeant. Following his discharge, he attended a farm
course at the Iowa State University for poultry raising and management.
Al married Bertie Lauer on June 16, 1951, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in
Marshfield. In 1952 he took on the Ralston Purina franchise for dairy and other
animal feeds.
He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, Stratford, serving as an usher
and Eucharistic minister. He led a Bible study group for several years. Al and
Bertie taught religious education. He also served on the Parish Council.
Al was active in the Stratford Lions Club for more than 50 years serving as
secretary for many years. He was also the liaison between the Stratford Boy
Scout organization and served as Cub Scout master. He was honored by the Lions
Club with the Melvin Jones Fellow award. Al served on the Stratford Village
Board for one term. He was a member of VFW Post No. 6352.
Al is survived by his wife, Bertie, of 66 years; and his children, Mary (James)
Ellerbusch, Jane Esselman, Richard (Cindy), Judith (James) Wagner, Joseph
(Sally), Elizabeth (Larry) Brantner, Charles (Anne Marie), Ronald (Mary), Peter
(Marie), Anthony (Ruth) and Raymond; 28 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren
and two more expected. Aloysius is also survived by his brothers, Philip and
Thomas (Jean); his sister, Jeanette Schuster; and sister-in-law, Elaine Becher.
Al was predeceased in death by his parents; brothers, Leo, Walter and Roman;
sisters, Magdalen, Sister Marita, Mary, Florence and Joan; granddaughter, Erica;
and great-grandson, Jonathan.
Memorials may be given to St. Joseph Catholic Church and St. Joseph Catholic
School.
