Hanson, Dorothy Marjorie Leona (21 December 1920 – 23 November 2017)

Dorothy Marjorie Leona Hanson, age 96, of Black River Falls, passed away Nov. 23, 2017, at Pine View Care Center in Black River Falls. She was born in Oshkosh, Dec. 21, 1920, daughter of Paul and Catherine (Miller) Schultz.

She married Clarence Rutherford in Ohio on June 19, 1940. He passed away Jan. 13, 1974.

She married Robert G. Hanson in Black River Falls on April 2, 1977. He passed away March 31, 2002.

She was raised in Neillsville where she graduated from high school. She worked as a waitress in Little Rock, AR, Chicago, IL, and Black River Falls. She was a salesperson at Locken Shoe Store, and Gene’s Bootery from 1950 to 1977. She received the Clara Barton Award in 1976.

She was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church and Ladies’ Aid, as well as a member of the Red Cross volunteers. She worked with the Red Cross Bloodmobile program for many years. She organized the VA Club in Tomah, and went to the Veteran’s Hospital on a monthly basis. She volunteered at the hospital for 45 years. She started the “Tuesday Helpers,” putting on parties at Pine View Care Center nursing home each Tuesday for 40 years and also volunteered at several others nursing homes. She received the International Year of the Disabled Person Volunteer of the Year Award in 1981, at the Veteran’s Hospital in Tomah.

She was presented with a plaque Nov. 11, 1995, for “Many Years of Dedicated and Courageous Service to our Hospitalized American Vets,” and also from the commander from AM Vets Post $5494. She was a member of and past president of the Thompson Red-Cloud VFW Auxiliary Post #1959, and also their hospital chairman for many years. She was a member of and past president of Miles Hagen Post #200 Legion Auxiliary, and also served as their hospital chairman. She was active in their Poppy program, and served as chairman.

She is survived by her “adopted” son, Ian (Marge) Turner; many nieces and nephews; sisters-in-law Jeanette Rutherford, and Gertrude Rutherford; and special Christian friends.

She is preceded in death by her parents; husbands, Clarence and Robert; sister Helen Knutson, and two brothers, Alfred Schultz and Hallie Schultz.

Funeral Services will be held 11 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 7, 2017, at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Black River Falls, with Pastor Steve Stork officiating. Burial will follow at 1:30 p.m. at Neillsville City Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 10 a.m. until time of services on Thursday.

Torgerson’s Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements.
