Lester W. Abel, son of Mr. and Mrs. Ted Abel of Greenwood (Clark Co., Wis.), and
a 1961 graduate of Greenwood High School, received a qualifying for membership
in the President's Club of Washington National Insurance Company.
The following citation was given him:
"Membership in Washington National's President Club connotes a high degree of
professional competence, plus unusually noteworthy achievement in providing the
benefits of life and health insurance to clients. Our President's Club qualifies
are to be congratulated, not only for their qualification for this exclusive
organization, but also for the professional performance which made it possible."

Steiger, Ervin J., Early PCA Retirement (1985)
Ervin J. (Ertz) Steiger, president of the Production Credit Association of
Neillsville and it’s chief executive officer since 1957, announced this week
that he has accepted the Farm Credit Services early retirement program and will
resign as PCA president effective June 30, 1985. He will have completed 35 1/2
years with PCA.
Steiger stated that hie is one of several PCA and Federal Land Bank Association
presidents (in the states of Wisconsin, Minnesota, Michigan and North Dakota)
that qualified for the temporary special early retirement program presently
offered by Farm Credit Services of St. Paul. The early retirement program is
designed to accommodate and enhance the planned mergers of PCA’s and FLBA’s.
Present plans call for the merger of the PCA of Neillsville with the PCA of
Wausau and PCA of Antigo in the fall of 1985.
Steiger is only the third chief executive officer of the PCA of Neillsville,
which was formed in 1933. He served under the direction of the other two
association managers, Richard M Horswill and Kenneth W. Radloff. Serving as the
association’s board chairman with Steiger were A.L. (Archie) Sparkes, Humbird;
Roger Curran, Taylor; Ralph Wolk, Owen; and Norman Meissner, Chili.
Steiger graduated from the Greenwood High School in 1947 and after working at
the Greenwood Gleaner and Clark County Press, he became employed as the PCA’s
bookkeeper in 1949, it’s loan officer in 1951 and it’s president in 1957. He saw
the association’s loan volume grow from $229,000 in 1949 to a peak of $47
million in 1983. During his tenure as president, five new office buildings were
built in Neillsville, Black River Falls, Loyal, and Thorp. 26 employees
presently are serving the 900 farme3r-members that own the PCA.
Steiger and his wife-the former Dorothy Kauffman of Loyal have 3 children,
Keith, a lieutenant in the Naval Reserved at Sheboygan; David, branch manager of
the Blunt Ellis & Loewi office at Stevens Point; and Debra, systems engineer
with IBM at San Diego, California.
Steiger stated he will begin serving as merger coordinator of the Farm Credit
Services of North Central Wisconsin in July.

Dr. Manz – Dr. Johnson Join 50 Year Club (Medical Society - 1985)
Dr. Kenneth F. Manz, Neillsville, and Dr. John W. Johnson, Withee, were recently
inducted into the ‘Fifty Year Club’ of the Wisconsin State Medical Society. Dr.
Timothy Flaherty, president of the Society, presented the awards at the group’s
annual meeting in La Crosse. This honor is bestowed to express gratitude to
physicians who have served their profession and patients with experience and
integrity for 50 years.
A general practitioner, Dr. Manz is a graduate of the Wisconsin Medical School,
serving both his internship and residency at Augustana Hospital, Chicago.
Married, with four children, he is a member of the Clark County Medical Society,
American Medical association and the State Medical Society of Wisconsin.
Dr. Johnson, a 1935 graduate of the College of Medical Evangelists in
California, served internship at Columbia Hospital, Milwaukee, and residency at
Milwaukee Children’s Hospital and Milwaukee Contagious Hospital. A widower, Dr.
Johnson has five children.

Farm Progress Days Scholarships (Winners - 1985)
Four Clark County High School graduates have been awarded $500 by the Farm
Progress Says Scholarship Committee to further their education. Winners of the
scholarships are, Lori Bakke, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Bakke, Curtiss;
Tami Fritz, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Larry Fritz, Owen; Jim Schmitt, son of Mr.
and Mrs. LaVerne Schmit, Neillsville and Ann Steiner, daughter of Mr. and Mrs.
Francis Steiner, Granton.
The four winning youth competed with 14 other Clark County students. The
selection was based on their application, recommendations, high school grades,
activities and a personal interview. First alternate was Karen Heineck,
Neillsville and second alternate was Larry Viegut, Abbotsford.

Neillsville – FHA Advisor of the Year (Meyer - 1985)
A rural Neillsville woman was named 1985 Advisor of the year by the Wisconsin
Future Homemakers of American-Home Economics Related Occupations (FHA-HERO) at
their State Leadership Conference in La Crosse two weekends ago. Receiving the
honor was Pamela Meyer, Rt. 4, a home economics instructor at Augusta High
School.
The award is based upon recommendations of local chapter members, school
administration, and FHA-HERO organization activities carried out at the school
and community levels. FHA-HERO is a vocational organization for high school
students in home economics classes.
Meyer, who holds a Bachelors of Science Degree from the University of
Wisconsin-Madison, had taught at Augusta the past three and a half years. Prior
to that she held positions in Iowa-Grant Schools, Livingston, where she
introduced their first FHA chapter, Stoughton, and Neillsville.
Under her leadership the Augusta chapter has grown to 59 members. Meyer is also
a former state FHA officer and holds a state Future Homemakers Achievement
degree (high school).

Granton High School Class of 1985 (Graduates - 1985)
The Class of 1985 will bid adieu to Granton High School on Friday, May 17, when
commencement exercises are held at 8:00 p.m. in the Elementary gym.
Picked to address the graduates and their well-wishers are Valedictorian Carolyn
Winter, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Richard Winter, Rt. 1 Granton, and Salutatorian
Ann Steiner, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Francis Steiner.
Granton High School also names the top five academically of the graduating class
as honor students. Joining Winter and Steiner on that list are Donna Naedler,
daughter of Mrs. Patricia Naedler, Joyce Naedler, daughter of Mr. and Mrs.
Marvin Naedler, and Gary Grassman, son of Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd Grassman, all of
Rt. 1 Granton.
Both Winter and Steiner can safely be labeled as “straight A students” according
to Reg Gobin, high school principal. But their school involvement goes well
beyond the classroom. For the past year Winter served as president of the
Granton Future Homemakers of America Chapter and senior class treasurer. In
addition she has been a member of the Varsity Club, Fine Arts Club, forensics,
all school play, annual, National Honor Society (three years) and participated
in track and cross country.
Steiner was recognized only a few weeks ago by the Wisconsin Interscholastic
Athletic Association as (balance cut off of my copy).

Granton High School Scholarships (Received - 1985)
Reg Gobin, Granton High School Principal, recently announced the recipients of
this year’s scholarships.
Gary Grassman, son of Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd Grassman, Rt. 1 Granton, received
scholarships from Aid Association for Lutherans, Mid State Foundation
Association, Independent Teacher Association and Granton Education Association
totaling $1200
Ann Steiner, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Francis Steiner, Granton, was also a
multiple recipient with scholarships from: Clark County Farm Progress and PEO
Scholarship Granton-Neillsville. These scholarships are worth $700.;
Marie Dachel, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Dachel, Granton, received the
Citizens State Bank of Loyal-Granton for $300.
Carmin Garbisch, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Orville Garbisch, Granton, and Joyce
Naedler, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Marvin Naedler, Granton, received $550
scholarships from Viterbo High Quiz Bowl.

Greenwood High School Prom – King & Queen (1985)
Tim Rueth and Sara Navrestad were the honored Kiing and Queen of the Greenwood
Community High School junior prom, held Saturday evening in the East Gym. The
theme decorated in blue, and silver was “A Night in Heaven” with Z100’s “Rock
and Roll to Go” providing music. Parents are Mr. and Mrs. Leonard Rueth and Mr.
and Mrs. Tennes Navrestad. Other members of the court were Jodi Olson and Kenny
Vesel, freshmen; Kendra Huegel and Daryl Hannan, sophomores; Theresa Abel and
Leif Wallin, juniors; and Janene Oldham and Tim Scherer, seniors.

Greenwood High School Alumni (44th Reunion Planned - 1985)
The 44th annual Greenwood High School Alumni Reunion Banquet will be held in the
East Gymnasium, Saturday, May 25, at 7:30 p.m. All alumni, family and friends
are welcome to attend. The outstanding award for 1985 will be presented and the
class of 1985 will be present. The class of 1935, whose members are celebrating
their 50 years since graduation, will be honored. The High School Swing Choir
will entertain.
