Loyal American Legion is honoring Mike Bauer this week.
Mike was born and raised in Loyal. He graduated Loyal High School in 1961. He
worked
for Noeldner Construction, building silos after his high school graduation and
later for
Langfeldt Construction straightening barns. He was drafted into the Army in
1965. He did
his eight-week basic training at Ft. Leonard Wood Missouri. He was then sent to
Chicago
for eight weeks training as a food inspector. His next assignment was Ft. Ord
California. In
May of 1965, when he was home on leave before being transferred to California,
he asked
his then girlfriend, Carol, to marry him. In July they were married at Ft. Ord
Army Chapel in
California. Because no close family was there, Mike asked his cousin from Los
Angeles to
be best man and Mike’s army captain’s wife to be maid of honor.
Mike began his duty as a food inspector at Ft. Ord and later was transferred to
the post
animal facility where he worked in the animal clinic. Stray dogs would be picked
up by the
out. Carol worked at the Ft. Ord Army Hospital on base as an X-ray technician.
In 1967, Mike was honorably discharged from the Army. They stayed in California
two
more years while Mike worked for a veterinarian as a vet tech and went to
college. In 1969,
they moved back to Wisconsin, where he worked as an AI tech for 37 years. Mike
and Carol
had four children, 13 grandchildren, and one great-grandchild. Mike has been a
member of
the American Legion for 43 years and Carol a member of the Legion Auxiliary for
six years.
