Hemphill, Evelyn Lucille (Stuffle) (29 OCT 1926 - 5 NOV 2017)
Evelyn Lucille Hemphill, 91, passed away on Sunday, Nov. 5, 2017 at her home in
Bruce and surrounded by her family.
Evelyn was born on Oct. 29, 1926 in Exeland to Walter and Anna May Stuffle. She
graduated from Bruce High School in 1944 and went on to marry Arnold Hemphill on
June 1, 1944 in Gainsville, Texas. While Arnold was stationed overseas during
WWII, Evelyn went to work as an electrician in the ship yards in Superior.
Evelyn worked in the Bruce School District as a custodian and cook for nearly
three decades. She was also well-known throughout the community for her creative
cake decorating for nearly 50 years. She was self-taught in her craft and later
taught cake decorating to others at WITC.
She loved serving in her church as a Sunday school teacher and women’s Bible
Study leader. She was the heart and soul of her home where her loved ones
enjoyed gathering together.
Evelyn is survived by her children, Sheila Hegna, Carl Hemphill, Donna (Russell)
Mayer and Melanie (Skip) Barfknecht; her 13 grandchildren; 27
great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren. She is also survived by
her four brothers and one sister, Walter Stuffle, Lyle Stuffle, Terry Stuffle,
Dick Stuffle and Phyllis Carter.
In addition to her parents and her husband, Arnold, she was preceded in death by
her son, Bradley Hemphill; her granddaughter, Heidi Guertin; her brother, Lloyd
Stuffle; and her sisters, Josephine Gordon, Frances Utz and Luella Collier.
Funeral services were held on Wednesday, Nov. 8 at Ladysmith Baptist Church.
