Jacob Daniel Martin, age 90, went to be with his Saviour on Sunday, Dec. 31,
2017 at Millers Merry Manor in Wakarusa, Ind., where he was a resident for three
years and eight months. He suffered from congestive heart failure.
He was born in Ulen, Minn., on Dec. 11, 1927 to Daniel and Anna (Keener) Martin.
In the fall of 1931, the family moved on a farm near Sheldon, where they
continued to raise the family.
At the age of 14, Jake became a Christian, was baptized and became a member of
the Sheldon Mennonite Church. (Dad always remarked about “such peace flooded my
soul that I’ll never forget” when he gave his heart to Jesus.
Jacob married Lydia Kalous on June 27, 1950. She preceded him in death on Dec.
18, 2013.
Jake was a dairy farmer for about 50 years. He was a good farmer and a hard
worker. He especially loved driving tractor and plowing. He kept his equipment
in tip-top shape and liked having things clean and neat.
When Lydia was admitted to the Ladysmith Living Center because of a severe
stroke in 2006, Jake faithfully visited her every day. He read the Bible to her,
prayed with her and showed her unconditional love, leaving a tremendous godly
example.
Jacob is survived by six daughters and three sons: Nancy (Donnie) Overholt of
Aroda, Va., Willard (Judy) Martin of Goshen, Ind., Priscilla (Loren) Martin of
Goshen, Ind., Nettie (Steve) Graber of Hillsboro, Kenny Martin of Goshen, Ind.,
Sally (Doug) Wenger of Wakarusa, Ind., Margaret (Richard) Schrock of Blackville,
S.C., Retha (Mark) Helmuth of Harrisonburg, Va. and Oliver Martin of Marshfield.
He is also survived by 36 grandchildren; 35 great-grandchildren; his sisters,
Ella Hershey and Rhoda Stoll; his brother, Lewis (Wilma) Martin and his
sisters-in-law, Pearl and Ada Martin.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Lydia; his parents, Daniel and Anna
Martin; his brothers, Perry, Edwin and George Martin; his sisters, Aletha
Kauffman and Mildred Hartman; his grandson, Jaran William Martin (stillborn) and
a great-grandson, Brandon Ray Overholt.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, Jan. 6 at the Sheldon Mennonite
Church. Burial will be in Woodlawn Cemetery in Sheldon.
Memorials in Jacob's name are requested to the Sheldon Mennonite Church.
