Spoolhoff, Emma Christine (Mattison) (15 MAR 1925 - 29 DEC 2017)
Emma Christine Spoolhoff (Mattison) passed away on Friday, Dec. 29, 2017.
She was born on March 15, 1925 to Lewis and Bertha (Benson) Mattison in Bruce
and grew up on a farm outside of Bruce.
Emma graduated from Bruce High in May of 1942. She worked at Montgomery Wards in
Chicago, Ill. after graduation and also in a defense factory as a riveter during
World War II.
She married Raymond Spoolhoff on Feb. 14, 1946. They had three children, Ivy,
Dale and Bradley. They were divorced in 1971.
Emma enjoyed reading and writing poetry. She was an avid crossword puzzle fan.
She also enjoyed Scrabble, bridge, cribbage, 500 and all card games. She
crocheted many doilies and gave them away as gifts.
She worked as a bookkeeper for many years. She loved statistics and kept records
of family history for the Benson and Mattison families. After retirement, Emma
traveled throughout the U.S. and Scandinavian countries.
Emma had a good sense of humor and was always ready with a joke or two.
Emma is survived by her daughter, Ivy (Jon); her son, Dale; her grandchildren,
Erik (Katie O'Hern) and Sara (Noah Bucher) and her great grandchildren, Emily,
Jon and Kinley Raths and Frank and Maeve Bucher. She is also survived by many
nieces, nephews and cousins.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Lewis and Bertha; her stepmother,
Bonita (Scoles) Mattison; her son, Bradley; her sisters, Evelyn Larson, Dorothy
Nessel, Harriet Fuglsang and Bonnie Bocek and her brother, Arnold Mattison.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, Feb.1 at St. Stephens
Lutheran Church, 1965 E. County Rd E, White Bear Lake, Minn. 55110. There will
be a visitation at 10 a.m. before the service.
