Welzien, Grace I. (24 MAY 1924 – 6 JAN 2018)
Grace I. Welzien, 93, Loyal, passed away on Saturday, Jan. 6, 2018, at the
Marshfi eld Medical Center. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., on
Thursday, Jan. 11, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Loyal. Rev. Daniel Zimmerman
will officiate and burial will follow at Riverside Cemetery in Withee.
Pallbearers will be Terry Biddle, David Welzien, Jeff Meeker, Dick Rohde, Arnie
Becker and Orville Schwartz. Visitation will be held at the church, on Thursday,
from 10 a.m. until time of service.
Grace Irene Biddle was born on May 24, 1924, in the town of Reseburg, rural
Thorp, to Charles R. and Lena A. (nee Hendricks) Biddle. She was raised and
received her education in the Thorp area, attending Reseburg Grade School and
graduating from Thorp High School in 1942. After completing high school, Grace
moved to Vancouver, Wash., where she worked for Kaiser Company Inc. in the
shipyards during World War II. She married Alan R. Welzien on Dec. 5, 1945, in
Kent, Wash. They returned to Thorp in 1948 and then moved to Loyal in 1949. For
several years, Grace worked in the meat department at Relis' grocery store in
Loyal. After retiring, she cared for her elderly mother in Thorp for many years.
Her husband, Alan, passed away on July 5, 2011. Grace continued to live in Loyal
until the time of her death. She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church and its
TLCW. Grace had many interests, but especially loved sewing, quilting, reading,
her yard, going out to eat, and bowling when she was younger.
Grace is survived by her daughter, Peggy (Alan) Rohde of Mequon; two
grandchildren: Dana (Chris) Mayne and Jay Rohde; two great-grandchildren: Brooks
and Blake Mayne; and nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Alan; and two brothers:
Leland and Louis Biddle.
