Olson, Thomas John (30 MAR 1931 - 8 JAN 2018)
Thomas John Olson, age 86, passed away peacefully with his family at his side on
Monday, Jan. 8, 2018 at his residence in Winter.
Tom was born on March 30, 1931 in Rice Lake, the son of Alvin and Myrtle (Swcina)
Olson. He was united in marriage to Violet M. Strouf on July 29, 1955 at First
Presbyterian Church in Winter.
After graduating from Draper High School, Tom proudly served his country in the
U.S. Navy. He worked for Milwaukee Road Railroad and later attended college at
University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee and University of Wisconsin-Superior, where he
received his bachelor’s degree. He later earned his master’s degree from
University of Wisconsin-Whitewater.
Tom taught school for 33 years in Winter, Glidden, Superior, Bayfield, Oregon
and Prentice. He thoroughly enjoyed teaching, and the highlight of his career
was the opportunity to teach drivers education.
He enjoyed the outdoors, especially hunting, fishing and canoeing. He was a
faithful member of First Presbyterian Church and American Legion Post 303.
Tom is survived by his beloved wife of 62 years, Violet of Winter; his sister,
Patricia Rogers and many dear family members and friends.
In addition to his parents, Tom is preceded in death by his siblings, Sid, Lila,
DeWayne and Maxine Olson, and Bill Rogers.
A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 13 at First
Presbyterian Church, South Main Street in Winter, where visitation will be held
from 10 a.m. until the hour of the service. Pastor Rob Biller will officiate.
Full military honors will be accorded at the church by the Wisconsin Military
Honors Program.
Interment will follow in Winter Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorials in Thomas Olson’s name are requested to First
Presbyterian Church, P.O. Box 8, Winter, WI 54896.
