Herrell, Roger W. (20 JUN 1955 - 26 JAN 2018)

Roger W. Herrell, 62, of Dorchester, a Town of Little Black, Taylor Co. resident, died Friday, Jan. 26, 2018, at his residence under the loving care of his family and Hope Hospice.

A memorial service for Roger will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 3, at First Baptist Church, Medford, with Rev. Patrick Daniels presiding. Visitation will be held at the church from 4-7 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 2, also from 10 a.m. until the time of service at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 3. Larry Herrell will be serving as an urn bearer. Interment of his cremated remains will take place at Rock Cemetery, Grand Marsh, Adams County, at a later date.

Roger was born on June 20, 1955, at Portage, the son of Vern E. and Frances (Mutchler) Herrell. He attended Grand Marsh Elementary and Brooks Elementary Schools, both in Adams County.

He was a 1973 graduate of Adams-Friendship High School, attended UW-Eau Claire and was a 1983 graduate of the Wisconsin State Patrol Academy in Fort McCoy, where he received a sharp shooting award. His first marriage was in 1975 to Janet Gulrud and they were later divorced. His second marriage was in 1985 at First Baptist Church, Medford, to Betty J. Smith and she survives.

After his education, he moved to the Medford area in 1983 and worked as a Wisconsin State Trooper for 15 years and received a Meritorious for Life Saving award from the State of Wisconsin while a trooper. Then he owned and operated R-B Construction, worked as a foreman for Kulps of Stratford and worked as a handyman for the Taylor Co. Humane Society until ill health forced his retirement. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, logging, mechanic work, fast cars and spending time with his grandchildren. He was a member of the Christian Bible Fellowship of Stetsonville.

Roger is survived by his wife, Betty J. Herrell of Dorchester; mother, Frances Herrell of Oxford; children, Amber (Robert) Chaffee of Medford, Ben (Kristy) Herrell of Bolingbrook, Ill., and Emily (fiance-Marc Jackson) Herrell of Eagan, Minn.; seven grandchildren, Zackery, Aubry, Robert Jr. and Logan Chaffee, Benjamin Jr., Jacob and Madison Herrell; his siblings, Lois (Bruce) Christensen of Adams, Larry (Kris) Herrell of Green Lake, Karen (Dennis) Gilmore of Indio, Calif., Lori (Mike) Wheeler of Greenville, Tim (Lanni) Herrell of Yakima, Wa., and Tony (Tina) Herrell of Treasure Island, Fla.; his brothers/sister-in-law, Theodore Smith of Park Falls, Burl (Sandy) Smith of Marshfield and Anna.

He was preceded in death by his daughter, Jennifer Herrell in 1978; and his father, Vern E. Herrell in 1996.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions to be given to Hope Hospice of Medford.
