Chamber Fetes The Press’s 150th Year

The faces and technologies are different than they were 150 years ago, but The
Clark County Press is forging on as the hub of news for Neillsville and the
surrounding area.
The Clark County Press was among the businesses honored for reaching milestones
Jan. 27 at the Neillsville Area Chamber of Commerce’s recognition banquet at
Fannie’s Supper Club.
Dee Zimmerman, who’s worked at The Clark County press for 49 of its
century-and-a-half of existence, received the Chamber’s plaque honoring the
sesquicentennial milestone that was reached last fall.
Zimmerman, who each week compiles her full-page “The Good Old Days” column, also
compiled the history of the newspaper for the banquet.
In that history, she noted how E. E. Merritt established The Clark County
Republican-Press, with the first publication coming off the press on Oct. 25,
1867. An earlier small newspaper had previously been published for about 10
years in Neillsville but had closed.
Zimmerman’s history said there were 11 consolidations of newspapers over the
years in Neillsville.
“The various owners came and went, selling out, or abandoning their publications
of short existence,” she wrote.
The final consolidation occurred in the mid-1930s when the Clark County Press
purchased the Granton News. Wells Harvey purchased the newspaper in 1938, and
it’s since been printed under the flag of The Clark County Press.
The latest version of the newspaper is published each Wednesday by News
Publishing Inc., based in Black Earth.
