Petkovsek, William J. "Bill" (18 FEB 1942 – 5 FEB 2018)

William J. “Bill” Petkovsek, 75, Greenwood, passed away at his home on Monday, Feb. 5, 2018. Per Bill’s wishes, no services will be held. A private burial of his cremains will take place in St. Bernard Catholic Cemetery in Thorp at a later date. A celebration of Bill’s life will be held from 3-6 p.m., on Friday, Feb. 16, at the Blue Mirror in Greenwood.

William John Petkovsek was born on Feb. 18, 1942, in Greenwood, to Anton F. and Dorothy K. (nee Anderson) Petkovsek. He was raised and received his education in the Greenwood area, graduating from Greenwood High School in 1961. After high school, Bill was drafted into the U.S. Air Force and served from Oct. 2, 1961 to August 17, 1965. He married Yvonne M. Lobacz at St. Hedwig’s Catholic Church in Thorp on Aug. 13, 1966. They lived in Zion, Ill., and Bill worked as an accountant at DexterMidland in Waukegan, Ill. They moved back to Greenwood in 1977, where they owned and operated the Y.O.W. Store. Bill later worked in Marshfield with heating and air conditioning and maintenance. After retiring in 2007, he resided in Greenwood until his death. He was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Greenwood, was a member of the Greenwood American Legion for 35 years, and served as a volunteer fireman on the Greenwood Fire Department for more than 20 years. Bill had many interests, but especially loved golfing, fishing, hunting, playing cards, cooking breakfast for his grandchildren, going for drives in the country, and stopping at his local establishments for his refreshment of choice, a Pepsi.

He is survived by his daughters: Tammy (Chuck) Niles of Marshfield, Kelly Petkovsek of Hugo, Minn., and Melanie (Josh) Gerhard of Eagan, Minn.; seven grandchildren: Tony Petkovsek, Amanda Niles, Brittany Niles, Makayla Petkovsek, Jacob Gerhard, Malia Gerhard, and Noah Gerhard; three sisters: Maryann Wayer, Patricia Whitney, and Delores (Bill) Lee, all of Waukegan, Ill.; three brothers: Anton “Tony” Petkovsek Jr. of Lake Elsinore, Calif., James (Janet) Petkovsek of Greenwood, and Robert “Bob” (Barbara) Petkovsek of Neillsville; one sister-in-law: Alice Petkovsek; and several nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Yvonne, on June 6, 2017; one son, Michael, in infancy; two brothers: Edward and Arthur Petkovsek; one sister-in-law: Jeanette Petkovsek; and two brothers-in-law: Joe Wayer and Marvin Whitney.
