Powell, Richard L. Sr. (19 SEP 1937 - 18 FEB 2018)

Richard L. Powell Sr., age 80, of McHenry, Ill., peacefully passed away Sunday, February 18, 2018, at his home surrounded by his loving family.

He was born September 19, 1937 in Paris, Tenn., to Daniel and Selma (Thorne) Powell. On July 2, 1955, he married the love of his life, Barbara Snow, in Corinth, Miss.

Formerly of Chicago and Mundelein, Ill., Richard and his wife have been McHenry residents for 24 years. Richard worked in the trucking industry for over 40 years. He was a valued employee of Orval Kent trucking and Illinois Gulf Central Railroad.

He was an avid NASCAR fan and had a passion for fishing, and a member of the Shepherd of the Hills church in McHenry. Richard enjoyed taking trips with his wife to their cabin in Dellwood; it was their little piece of heaven. Richard was a loving husband, wonderful dad, and an adoring grandfather who will be missed by all.

Richard is survived by his wife of 62 years, Barbara; five children, Rick (Janet) Powell, Keith (Vannessa) Powell, Kevin (Ange) Powell, Terri (Dan) Wiersma and Kenneth (Maricela) Powell; 11 grandchildren, Josh (Mis), Kayla (Anthony), Lindsay, Sarah, Zachary, Alex, Ricky, Robin, Allyson, Koen and Isabella; and two great-grandchildren, Lincoln and Jacob.

In addition to his parents, Richard was preceded in death by his sister, Georgia Henderson.

Visitation will be Friday, Feb. 23, from 4 p.m. until 8 p.m. at Justen Funeral Home and Crematory, 3700 W Charles J. Miller Road, McHenry, IL 60050. The funeral service will begin at 10:30 a.m. in the funeral home on Saturday, Feb. 24.

Interment will be in Woodland Cemetery, McHenry, Ill.

For those wishing to send an expression of sympathy, the family suggests memorials in Richard’s name to the NASCAR Victory Junction Gang (https://victoryjunction.org/).
