Zaborowski, Mary (Gabrys) (18 JAN 1920 - 26 FEB 2018)
Mary Zaborowski age 98, of Gilman died of old age on Monday, February 26, 2018
at The Home Place in Stanley.
A funeral mass will be held at 11AM at St. Peter & Paul Catholic Church in
Gilman with Father Madanu Lourdu officiating. Burial will follow in Meadowbrook
Catholic Cemetery. Visitation will be from 9:30 AM until time of service Monday
at the Church.
The former Mary Gabrys was born January 18, 1920 in Lublin, Wisconsin. She was
the daughter of the late Bert and Anna (Kowalczyk) Gabrys. Following her
mother's death in 1944, she sold the farm and moved to Chicago where she helped
raise her younger siblings.
She married Leo “Buck” Zaborowski on April 16, 1945 officiated by Father Kalmon
at the St Peter & Paul Catholic Church in Gilman. The couple lived and worked in
Chicago until 1949 when they moved to Gilman.
Mary held a variety of jobs – Department head at Neiser's Department Store in
Chicago, assessor and treasurer for Gilman, worked at Blue Moon Cheese Factory,
Thorp, and was head cook at Gilman schools, specializing in home cooked meals.
She cooked at a camp in Rhinelander and
was a Hospice volunteer. She found her volunteer hours with hospice to be very
rewarding. During the 1970's she and her brother Alex attended classes and
earned their GED diplomas.
She was a member of St Peter & Paul Catholic Church, member of the Rosary
Society and Guild. Mary enjoyed reading, fishing, grandchildren, outdoors,
playing cards and board games. The last two years of her life she received
excellent care from the unfailingly kind and hardworking staff at the Home Place
in Stanley. She spent her last days peacefully, attended by the staff, her
family and the wonderful volunteers of HSHS St. Joseph's Hospice.
She is survived by her daughter Karen (Fred) Stendel in Jump River and son Chuck
(Karen) Eau Claire. Four grandchildren Eric (Dawn) Stendel Jump River, Angie Eau
Clarie and Dan (Laura) Menomonie). Erin (Joe) Hattamer, Marshfield. Two great
grandchildren, Amelia and Leo Hattamer, sister Lottie Rogers, Dyer, Indiana and
Ann Casper (Harold) Kirksville, MO and many nieces and nephews.
She is preceded in death by her husband Leo (Buck) 1979, her parents, three
sisters; Lucille, Katherine, Victoria and four brothers, Frank, John, Alex and
Stanley.
