Sauer, Clara (Poehnlein) (17 MAR 1907 - 3 JAN 2006)

Clara Sauer, 98, died Tuesday, Jan. 3, 2006, at the Palliative Care Unit of Saint Joseph's Hospital.

Clara was born March 17, 1907, in the town of Little Black, Medford, to John and Clara (Baumgartner) Poehnlein.

She attended school in Little Black and the Taylor County Normal School. She then taught in the area for several years.

She was united in marriage to Leo J. Sauer on June 17, 1931, at Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Medford. He passed away March 26, 1983. They lived there until 1945. They then moved to the Marshfield area and farmed in the town of Cameron.

Clara was employed at the canning factory and Figi's for many years.

She was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church and it's Christian Mothers Society. She enjoyed playing cards, crocheting doilies and working crossword puzzles. She was a friend to many and loved by all who knew her.

Clara is survived by five daughters, Joyce (Harvey) Wright of Lakeland, Fla., Carol (Arnold) Raab of Cascade, Deanne Hawley of Kimberly, Ruth (Charles) Cherney of Spencer, and Kathleen Olsen of Marshfield; and three sons, Kenneth Sauer of Port Charlotte, Fla., Mark (Carolyn) Sauer of Marshfield, and Leon Sauer of Marshfield. She is further survived by 33 grandchildren; 50 great-grandchildren; six great-great-grandchildren; two step-great-grandchildren; and four step-great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents at a young age; husband, Leo; 12 brothers and sisters, Frank, John, Andrew, and Joe Poehnlein, Marge Lehman, Elizabeth Brunner, Rose Jensen, Hannah Rothamer, Gertrude Danen and three siblings who died in infancy. She was the last living child of John and Clara Poehnlein.

She was also preceded in death by a son-in-law, Roger Hawley; daughter-in-law, Virgene Sauer; three grandchildren, Sandra Wright, Douglas Sauer and Timmy Hawley; two great-granddaughters, Jessica Wright and Tonya Schram; and a step-great-great-granddaughter, Chloe Harp.

A Mass of Christian burial will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 7, 2006, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church with the Rev. Peter Manickam officiating. Burial will be in Holy Rosary Catholic Cemetery in Medford.
