Churkey, Charles (20 JUN 1881 – 09 MAR 1971)
Funeral services were held at 1:30 p.m. Friday, March 12, 1971 at the Hoeper and
Kraut Funeral Home, Owen, for Charles Churkey, 89, of Owen (Clark Co., Wis.),
who died at 8:10 p.m. Tuesday, March 9, 1971 at the Havenet Nursing Home in
Owen.
Officiating at the final rites was Rev. H.W. Luetkehoelter, pastor of Nazareth
Lutheran Church, Withee, and interment was made in the cemetery at Greenwood.
Serving as pallbearers were Elwood Fischer, Louis Hardrath, Ted Piekola, John
Prepuleh, Tom Jablonic, and Charles Pribbernow.
Mr. Churkey was born June 20, 1881 in Iowa and received his education there. He
was married March 5, 1903 in Iowa to Jenny McCammit, who preceded him in death
March 5, 1926. His second marriage to Julia Lewis took place in Iowa in 1936.
She also preceded him in death in 1950.
Mr. Churkey came to Wisconsin and settled in Hayward in 1907. Later that same
year he moved to Greenwood (Clark Co., Wis.). He operated a farm there until
1924, when he came to Owen. He had been at the Havenet Nursing Home for about a
year.
Survivors include four sons, Marvin Churkey, Owen; David Churkey, Auburndale,
Charles Churkey Jr. of Withee; and William B. Churkey of Marshfield; 11
grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.
