Will, Joan Elizabeth (Ott) (8 OCT 1933 - 8 APR 2018)
Joan (Ott) Stelzl Will, formerly of Spencer and Colby, passed away peacefully on
Sunday, April 8, 2018, at Cedar Creek Manor, Mosinee.
Joan Elizabeth Ott was born Oct. 8, 1933, in Neillsville, to Reinhold and
Elizabeth (Bock) Ott. She grew up in Nasonville, attended Lone Elm School and
graduated from Marshfield Senior High in 1950 at the age of 16. Joan earned a
full scholarship to the Teachers’ College upon graduation, but the family
culture of the time dictated that she was not permitted to continue her
education. She was proud of her accomplishments, but the inability to continue
her education was a source of consternation her entire life.
Following high school, she was employed by Bonded Collectors in Marshfield for a
short time. She then took a position with the Marshfield News-Herald as a
proofreader until her marriage. On June 27, 1952, she married Arnold Stelzl of
Spencer at Grace Lutheran Church in Nasonville. They farmed in the town of
Brighton and celebrated over 25 years of marriage until Arnold’s death on July
1, 1979.
His death necessitated the sale of the family farm and a move to the village of
Spencer. She then worked for Dave Fricke of Central Wisconsin Insurance, until
her marriage to Neland Will of Colby on June 11, 1982.
Joan found herself back on a dairy farm, milking cows and doing field work until
retiring for a second time, returning to the village of Spencer. Joan and Neland
celebrated over 25 years of marriage until his death on Oct. 21, 2007.
Joan served as a church organist and choir director for many years at both
Trinity Lutheran Church in Spencer and St Paul’s Lutheran Church (North Green
Grove) in Colby. At one point, one of the grandchildren, Megan, decided that it
was impossible to have two ladies in her life to call Grandma. Joan became
Granny and was known only by that name to her family from that time forward.
Survivors include four children, Michael and Shirley Stelzl of Marathon, Janean
and Roger Morrow of Spencer, Janell Stelzl of Wausau and Mark and Sheila Stelzl
of Appleton; ten grandchildren, Chadwick and Christina Stelzl of Plano, Texas,
Cheri and Tony Wilke of Loyal, Steven and Autumn Stelzl of LaCrosse, Kristi and
Jeremy Schreiber of Edgar, Eric Morrow and Heather Rappaport of Las Vegas, Megan
and Joshua Stanchik of Wausau, Aaron and Jianna Stelzl of Mosinee, Andrea
“Annie” Stelzl of Tampa, Florida, Samantha Stelzl of Appleton, and Sheridan and
Jay Zamora of Oshkosh; eight great-grandchildren, Taylor Wilke, Nicholas Wilke,
Haylee Schreiber, Austin Schreiber, Savanah Wilke, Clara Stelzl, Hadlee Stelzl
and Casey Stanchik. Joan is further survived by the daughters and families of
Neland Will, along with sisters-in-law, Zona Eblom, Doris Schilling and Arlene
Will.
Joan was preceded in death by her parents; her husband’s; and siblings, Arlene
and Earl Meissner, Helen and Lawrence Dix, and Alvin and Violet Ott.
A funeral service will be held at noon on Saturday, April 14, at Saint Andrew
Lutheran Church, 3200 N. Mountain Rd., Wausau, where Joan was most recently a
member. Friends and family may call from 10 a.m. until the time of service.
Interment will be at Trinity Lutheran Church Cemetery, Town of Brighton, North
Spencer.
