The Secretary of defense, Melvin R. Laird, will honor Cheryl Zimmerman, student
at Owen-Withee High School, at a program in Wausau Saturday, June 19, 1971.
Miss Zimmerman is a 1971 winner of a Laird Youth Leadership Foundation
scholarship. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Zimmerman, Box 295, Owe
(Clark Co., Wis.). The scholarships are awarded annually by the Foundation to
seniors in the 7th Congressional District high schools. The scholarships range
in amounts from $1000 to $2.000, depending on need and are based on scholarship
and leadership capabilities.
John Potter, a Wisconsin Rapids attorney, who si president of the Laird
Foundation, said Secretary Laird meets with the scholarship winners each year to
personally get to know them and discuss with them their plans to use the
scholarships.
Accompanying the winners will be their parents and their high school principals.
Also invited to the luncheon, to be held at the Wausau Club, are the 1970
winners and their parents.
Other 1971 award winters attending the luncheon are: Marleen Anklam, Marshfield;
Robert Barrington, New London; Colleen Beaman, Berlin; Susan Geralski, Wausau;
Jeffrey Hertz, Wausau; John Metzke, Greenwood, Scott Needham, Loyal; Jane Nemke,
Wittenberg; and Mary Ann Strong, Edgar.
