Loyal American Legion is honoring Lawrence “Hap” Weyer this week.
Hap was born in 1944 and grew up in Loyal. He graduated from Loyal High School
in 1962. In 1962, Hap signed up for the Army Reserve. On New Year’s Eve, 1962,
Hap, Billy Lindner, Dick Lindner, and Dave Bushman all got on a train in
Merrillan, Wisconsin. They went from there to Chicago, took another train to St.
Louis and got onto a bus from St. Louis to Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri. Hap had
basic training and then worked with the combat engineers. He was stationed at
Fort Leonard Wood for about six months. After the six months he came home and
stayed in the Army Reserves for three years. They built bridges in the area and
Minnesota on the weekends he did his trainings. In 1967, Hap married his wife,
Joann. They have been married 50 years. Hap has three sons, two grandchildren,
and one great-grandchild. Hap has been an active member of the American Legion
for nine years.
