Egstad, Becky (Gold Medal - 1984)

Nothing can make memories more for a youngster than to be at a professional football game, but even better memoires can develop when you get to stand next to James Loften, star of the Green Bay Packers. Loften joined Becky Egstad of Neillsville last week in Stevens Point. Becky had just won a gold medal in the Wisconsin Special Olympics and her winning softball throw got attention of Loften.

Gress, Donald – Heart Transplant (Fund - 1984)

Approximately $500 is now resting in trust accounts for Don Gress, 20, who is in need of a heart transplant operation.

The accounts, held at both the Neillsville Bank and First National Bank, were opened one week ago when it was announced by family members that Gress needed to raise approximately $125,000 for the transplant procedure.

Gress, a 1982 graduate of Neillsville High School, is now in Pennsylvania for a second medical opinion on the transplant. He was taken ill about seven weeks ago, said his mother, Cara Jean Gress. Initial reports are that Gress has a life expectancy of less than three years if he doesn’t receive a transplant.

On Tuesday evening, June 5, a group of citizens gathered in Neillsville to coordinate fund-raising efforts, said Tony Sikora, who will chair the endeavor.

According to Sikora, several events have been scheduled/ These include a dance on June 29 at the Neillsville American Legion Hall; a “chicken shoot” at the Neillsville Gun-Trap Club on July 8; a Jaycette Jazzercise program on July 11; a bowl-a-thon (Scotch doubles) at Strike Time Lanes on July 15; and a pig roast on August 4. More specific information on the fundraisers will be announced at a later date, Sikora added.

Sikora stated that donations can be made to the Gress Fund at either Neillsville Bank or First National Bank. Numerous area businesses also have donation receptacles with funds collected there to be turned over to the banks.

Those wishing to volunteer their time and efforts may contact Tony Sikora at 606 East Second Street, Neillsville, or by telephoning 743-3081.

Mother Of The Year
By Jason Hammond

My mother deserves Mother of the Year because she baby sits for four children besides her two own. One time she babysat for seven children without losing her mind.

She also deserves this award for being a kind, considerate, loving and helpful mother. It’s not often a mom can have those qualities with three or four kids fighting. But she keeps us in line, while keeping her cool.

My mom gets me mad sometimes but deep down I know it’s for my own good. For instance, some nights when I want to stay up late on a school night she won’t let me, she says wait for the weekends to do that. I get upset but I do what she says.

Those are just some of the reasons why my mother deserves this award. Here are some others: great cook, calm, cleans, picks up after me, lokes my friends and many others.
