Smith, Loretta Helena (100th Birthday – 30 June 2018)
In 1918, the year marking the end of World War K and the Austro-Hungarian
Empire, Loretta Helena Schield was born in Neillsville. Today she lives in
Granton, where she’s lived most of her life, and on June 30, will celebrate her
100th birthday. The daughter of area farmers Frank Schield and Anna Kudek,
Loretta attended teacher training school in Neillsville. After graduation she
taught grades 1-8 at various one-room schools in the Neillsville and Granton
areas. While working in that capacity, she met Vernon Edward Albert Smith, who
was serving on the school board. In 1941, just before turning 23, Loretta
married Vernon, a Granton native three years her elder. They owned and operated
a dairy farm in the Granton area, where they raised their 13 children.
