Christine Noah has been named Thorp High School 1975-76 Betty Crocker Family
Leader of Tomorrow. Christine won the honor by competing with other seniors in
the written knowledge and attitude examination on December 2, 1975. She will
receive a certificate from General Mills, sponsor of the annual education
scholarship program, and become eligible for state and national honors.

Gerard Meyer, son of Mr. and Mrs. Theodore Meyer, 204 E. Stanley, Thorp, is a
member of the UW-Stevens Point Choir which will perform at the White House and
other historic sites in and around Washington, D.C., between April 8 and 11,
1976 to help spark enthusiasm for the nation’s 200th anniversary.
Professor Kenyard E. Smith, director of the 63-voice student organization,
announced that the group will be part of a series of concerts in Washington,
D.C., sponsored by the National Bicentennial Administration.

Into KAPPA MU EPSILON, a national mathematics honorary.
Nied is a student at the UW-River Falls. The requirements are: (1) Better than a
B-plus average in mathematics course; (2) be a mathematics major or minor with
at least five quarters of work completed, including calculus; and (3) be in the
top twenty percent of the student body academically.

Mrs. Ernest (Regina) Piper, 47, of 500 S. Maple Ave., Marshfield, died about
7:30 a.m. Friday at her home. Death was attributed to a heart attack.
The Rev. Eldore F. Messerschmidt, pastor of Immanuel Lutheran Church, conducted
services at 2 p.m. Monday in the Hansen Chapel. Burial followed in Hillside
Cemetery.
The former Regina Koeher was born September 1?, 1928 in Thorp, where she
received her education. She had resided in Marshfield the past 25 years.
Her marriage to Ernest Piper took place March 5, 2956 at Immanuel Lutheran
Church.
Survivors include her husband; a brother, George Koeher, Route 3, Marshfield; a
sister, Mrs. William (Mae) Hademache, Owen, and sever other brothers and sisters
living out of the area.
Two sisters preceded her in death.

Initiated on January 39, 1976 to the Delta Mu Chapter of the national fraternity
of Phi Beta Lambda at the University of Wisconsin, Eau Claire was Greg Osowski,
who home town is Thorp.
The purpose of Phi Beta Lambda, chartered at UW-Eau Claire in 19678, is to
assist young people enrolled in business programs, to develop vocation
competencies and a sense of civic responsibility. Events and activities
conducted regularly include participation in business education workshops and
secretarial seminars, in membership and social activities, and in state and
national conventions.

Varney, Verne V. (17 Jan 1897 – 17 Jan 1976)
Word has been received here of the death January 17, 1976 of University of
Wisconsin – Extension Professor Emeritus Verne V. Varney, known to several
generations of Wisconsin youth at “Mr. 4-H”. A native of Greenwood, Mr. Varney
died at his home in Madison on his 79th birthday.
He graduated from Greenwood High School in 1913 and earned his bachelor of
science degree from the University of Wisconsin, Madison in 1918. After two
years of service in the U.S. Army, he entered YMCA work, first at Stoughton for
two years, and then at South Dakota State College at Brookings, South Dakota,
for seven years.
He joined the Wisconsin 4-H staff and university faculty in 1928, and attained
the rank of professor in 1948. Professor Varney was a member of the state 4-H
staff for 37 years, retiring in 1965.

Marlo Mahoney, 1426 Johnson, Racine, Wisconsin. Both are 1975 graduates of the
University of Wisconsin at La Crosse.
