Gummerson, John H. (15 JAN 1895 – 26 SEP 1971)
John H. Gummerson, a resident of Owen (Clark Co., Wis.) for 48 years, and former
businessman until his retirement in 1960, was laid to his final resting place
yesterday, Wednesday, September 29, 1971. He passed away at 11:55 Sunday night
at St. Joseph's Hospital at Marshfield, where he had been a medical patient
since the 12th of the month.
Funeral services were conducted from the Hoeper and Kraut Funeral Home, with the
Rev. George Becker, pastor of Holy Rosary Catholic Church, Owen, officiating.
Burail was made at Riverside Cemetery, Withee, where military rites were
conducted by the Van Huisen-Fritz American Legion Post of Owen.
Henry Mauel SR., Bill Johnson, Lawrence Clark, Gib Johnson, Henry Anderson, and
Carl Marks acted as pallbearers.
He was born January 15, 1895 in Amberg, Wisconsin and attended school in
Ishpeming, Michigan. He was married June 15, 1918 at Camp Grant, Ill., to Julia
Mauer, who survives him.
A year after their marriage the couple moved Chippewa Falls, where they resided
four years, until 1923, when they came to Owen. Here he owned and operated a
blacksmith shop for many years, and with the transition from horses to
machinery, he too made the move, giving up the blacksmith trade and moving into
the implement business until his retirement in 1960.
He was a veteran of World War I and was an active member of the American Legion.
Surviving him are his widow; two sons, Charles, Long Beach, California, and
James, Owen; eight grandchildren, and a sister, Mrs. Aline Karye, route 4,
Greenwood.
A son, John, preceded him in death in 1962.
