Zschernitz, Edmund F. (30 MAR 1889 – 30 MAR 1956)

Neillsville – Ed Zschernitz, 67, of 1709 Pitcher Street, died Friday at Memorial Hospital. He had been in ill health for the past several months.

Edmund F. Zschernitz was born March 30, 1889 at Hamburg, Germany. When he was six years old his family came to the United States and settle in Chicago. They later moved to a farm south of Neillsville (Clark Co., Wis.), where Mr. Zschernitz attended country school. He then worked in logging camps and on farms. He entered into service on June 6, 1917 at Neillsville, and served on the Mexican border for a while, and then went overseas and served in France. He was a Supply Sgt. In Company "A" with the Third Wisconsin Infantry. After his discharge he started work for The Clark County Highway Department and worked for them for 33 years. He retired on April 1, 1954.

On January 15, 1933 he married Elizabeth Sonnentag at Neillsville. He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church and the American Legion, Haugen-Richmond Post No. 73. He was very active in Legion work and served as color bearer for many years.

He is survived by his wife, one daughter, Mrs. William Seif, Neillsville; one son, Edmund F. Zschernitz Jr, with the Armed Forces in Japan; 3 grandchildren and one brother, Carl, Neillsville; and one sister, Mrs. Bertha Wildish, Merrillan.

Funeral services with military rites will be held Tuesday at 9:00 a.m. at St. Mary's Catholic Church. The Rev. Fr. Peter J. Leketas officiating. Burial was made in the parish cemetery. A general rosary will be held Monday at 8 p.m. at the Bergemann Funeral Home.
