Hazel Elizabeth (Swaney) Schmitz, 94, of Bruce, passed away at Ladysmith Care
Community on Sunday, June 24, 2018.
Hazel was born to Bessie and Clinton Swaney at their Weyerhaeuser farm on March
28, 1924.
Farming was in Hazel’s life from birth. After going to school at Kief Country
School and Backus High School in Minnesota and graduating from Bruce High
School, she worked at Diamond Iron Works in Minneapolis, Minn. She married Henry
Schmitz in 1943 and started their family and farm just north of Bruce.
Four children, farming and working many years at Bruce Garment Factory kept her
very busy. Retirement took Hazel and Hank to Arizona for many winters where
their days were filled with friends and fun.

Margaret (Roger) Bebie of Grand Marais, Minn. and her sons, Kenny (Jeanne) of
Ellsworth and Joe (Julie) of Bruce. She is further survived by her nine

also survived by her brother Bill (Billie) Swaney of Thorpe and many nieces and

She was preceded in death by Henry, her husband of 64 years. She was also
preceded in death by her granddaughter, Kelsey Rae, daughter of Joe and Julie
Schmitz; her parents, Bessie and Clinton Swaney; her sisters, Dorothy (Clifford)
Tatro and Violet (Clarence) Johnson; and her brothers, Harold (Elaine) Swaney
and John (Alice) Swaney.
