Capes, Ernest E. (19 APR 1890 – 07 FEB 1972)
Services were conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday, February 9, 1972 at the Hansen
Chapel, Marshfield, for Ernest E. Capes, 81, of 209 E. ninth Street, whose death
occurred Monday. Death was apparently due to a heart attack.
The Rev. Wesley Dafoe, pastor of Wesley United Methodist Church, officiated, and
burial was made in the Colby (Clark Co., Wis.) Memorial Cemetery.
Mr. Capes was born April 19, 1890 in La Hogue, Illinois, and was married
December 23, 1914 in Middle Granville, N.Y., to Helen Evelyn Tooley, who
preceded him in death June 20, 1966. The couple resided in Goodland, Indiana, in
Taylor and Eau Claire Counties prior to moving too Withee (Clark Co., Wis.) in
1922. They operated a meat market and grocery store there for eight years, then
moved to Unity. In 1956 they moved to Marshfield, where he had since made his
home.
He was a member of Wesley United Methodist Church, and had served as trustee on
the Village Board in Unity.
Survivors include a son, Everett L. Capes, Marshfield; a daughter, Mrs. Gordon
(Betty) DuVall, Chicago; eight grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and a
brother, Jesse Capes of Withee.
In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by daughter, four sisters and
two brothers.
