Ft. Ord, California – Army Private Walter W. Erickson, 18, son of Mr. and Mrs.
Fred M. Erickson, route 2, Withee (Clark Co., Wis.), recently completed the
first phase of training under the modern volunteer army field experiment at Ft.
Ord, California.
The new concept, called Volar, combines basic and advanced individual training
into a single 16-week program. Decentralization instruction at the unit level
and a reduction of formations and inspections gives the soldier more time to
train and increased off duty time. Fewer restriction on off duty travel and
improved living facilities are other benefits of the Volar concept.
Pvt. Erickson received his training with Company D, 5th Battalion, 3rd Brigade.
He is a 1971 graduate of Owen-Withee High School.
