Smith, Neal (6 OCT 1904 – 1 AUG 1972)
Final rites were conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday, August 3, 1972 at the Hemer
Funeral Home, Medford, for Neal Smith, 67, of Medford, who died at 11:35 a.m.
Tuesday at St. Joseph's Hospital in Marshfield, where he had been a patient the
past two weeks. He had been in failing health for the past four years.
The Rev. Warren Behling, pastor of St. Paul's Lutheran Church, officiated, and
burial was made in Riverside Cemetery, Withee.
Mr. Smith was born October 6, 1904 in Withee (Clark Co., Wis.), and received his
education there. He was married at Medfrod on August 30, 1932 to the former
Evelyn Kurosker, who survives him. He had been employed with his father in
Withee in a trucking business until 1938, when he was appointed the first Taylor
County traffic officer. He served as a state traffic officer until 1946, and
then formed the Wood Products Company at Dorchester, known as Neal Smith, Inc.
He was a member of the Masonic Lodge and Royal Arch Masons, and of Zor Shrine,
Madison. He had also served in various offices in the Medford Flying Club.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Shirley Knippel,
Medford; three grandchildren; two brothers, Percy, St. Paul, Minnesota, and
George of Dorchester; three sisters, Mrs. Gerald Drake, Seattle, Washington;
Mrs. Charles Hamnerick, Sebastopol, California, and Mrs. Floyd Bailey of Thorp.
He was preceded in death by two brothers and one sister.
Memorials may be given to the Children's Shrine Hospital.
